In a move that demonstrates solidarity and support, Victoria’s new Chief Commissioner, Mike Bush, visited the Adass Israel Synagogue in Ripponlea this morning, eight months after it was severely damaged in a firebombing attack.
The visit marks a significant moment in the ongoing investigation into the December 6, 2024 attack, when masked arsonists set the synagogue alight with fuel, forcing worshippers to flee for their lives. Chief Commissioner Bush met with synagogue leaders, including President Michael Spigelman and Treasurer Benjamin Klein, to discuss the horrific event and its impact on the community.
The visit came just one day after investigators made a breakthrough in the case. The Victoria Police Joint Counter Terrorism Team arrested a 20-year-old man from Williamstown in connection with the theft of a car allegedly used in the attack. The stolen vehicle, a VW Golf, was reportedly driven to the Lux Nightclub arson and a separate arson and shooting incident at Bundoora, all occurring on the same night.
The attack on the Ripponlea synagogue shocked the community, and police are continuing their efforts to uncover those responsible. The arrested man has been charged in connection with the car theft, though the investigation is far from over.
During the visit, Mr. Bush expressed his commitment to continuing the work already undertaken by Victoria Police in the investigation. In a statement, Mr. Klein, the synagogue’s treasurer, expressed the community’s gratitude for the visit, noting that it provided meaningful support and reassurance.
“Their presence offered meaningful support and encouragement, which was warmly received by all,” Mr. Klein said. “Mr. Bush affirmed his commitment to building on the important work already undertaken by Victoria Police in the investigation. He demonstrated a clear understanding of the need for strong leadership to ensure safer streets and to stand firmly against hate across the Melbourne community.”
Mr. Bush’s visit is just one of many conversations he has had with the Jewish community since taking office as Chief Commissioner three weeks ago. The attack on the synagogue has sparked widespread concern about the rise of hate crimes in the city, and Victoria Police is continuing to work tirelessly to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
The police chief’s visit offers the community much-needed hope that the authorities will follow through with their commitment to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure such acts of violence are not tolerated in Melbourne.
