Netanyahu and Trump hail “historic achievement” with Gaza agreement

9 October, 2025

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Donald Trump have exchanged congratulations on what they described as a “historic achievement” following the signing of a pivotal agreement providing for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of all remaining hostages held by Palestinian groups, Netanyahu’s office announced.

In a statement, Netanyahu highlighted the diplomatic and national significance of the deal, emphasizing that “with the approval of the first phase of the plan, all our hostages will return home. This is a diplomatic success and a moral victory for the State of Israel.”

Netanyahu underscored that Israel would not rest until all hostages are returned and its strategic goals achieved. “Through unwavering determination, strong military action, and the tremendous efforts of our great friend and ally, President Trump, we have reached this critical turning point,” the Prime Minister said. He expressed gratitude to Trump for his leadership, cooperation, and steadfast commitment to Israel’s security and the freedom of its hostages, adding: “God bless Israel. God bless America. God bless our great alliance.”

The two leaders also agreed to continue close cooperation, with Netanyahu inviting Trump to deliver a speech at the Knesset, Israel’s parliament.

Israel’s government expects hostages in the Gaza Strip to begin being released on Saturday, according to a spokesperson speaking to Reuters. It remains unclear whether all 48 hostages—both alive and deceased—will be returned simultaneously.

Earlier, Netanyahu announced he would convene a cabinet meeting later in the day to formally approve the ceasefire agreement, which includes the repatriation of all hostages held by Hamas.

“This is a great day for Israel,” Netanyahu said, responding to President Trump’s announcement of the agreement aimed at ending the conflict that has lasted more than two years.
