Turkey backs ICJ opinion on Gaza, calls Israel’s actions illegal

Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has welcomed the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which highlights Israel’s obligations under international law to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

In an official statement released on Wednesday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said the Court’s findings “clearly demonstrate Israel’s violations of international law in the occupied Palestinian territories,” emphasizing that these actions “stand in direct contradiction to its international obligations.”

According to Ankara, the ICJ opinion “confirmed that Israel’s continuing crimes against the Palestinian people — including obstructing humanitarian aid and targeting UN facilities and personnel — constitute a violation of the international legal order.”

The ministry also pointed to the Court’s recognition that Israel’s attempts to undermine the operations and authority of the United Nations and the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) “are unlawful.”

Turkey further noted that it had “contributed to the proceedings before the ICJ through written and oral submissions,” reiterating its firm support for the Palestinian cause. “Turkey will continue to stand by the Palestinian people in their just struggle and to support all efforts aimed at ensuring the effective implementation of international law and the restoration of justice,” the statement concluded.

The ICJ’s advisory opinion, though non-binding, carries significant political and moral weight, especially as civilian suffering in Gaza continues amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
