Virgin Australia makes history with pet-friendly in-cabin flights

17 September, 2025

Virgin Australia has launched Australia’s first-ever in-cabin flights allowing small cats and dogs to travel alongside their owners.

Starting 16 October 2025, the “Pets in Cabin” service will operate on trial routes between Melbourne, the Gold Coast, and the Sunshine Coast, with a fee of $149 per pet per flight.

The trial runs until 30 January 2026, allowing up to four pets under 8kg per flight in approved soft-sided carriers stored under the seat. Designated pet seating and HEPA air filtration ensure passengers with allergies are protected. Cats are excluded from Melbourne–Gold Coast flights during the trial.

Virgin Australia CEO Dave Emerson said the service responds to long-standing customer demand and is expected to boost the pet-friendly travel sector. Veterinarian Katrina Warren described the launch as a milestone for pet-loving travellers, noting the importance of pets in Australian households.
