Greece’s hopes for the 2026 World Cup took a major blow after a 3–1 defeat to Scotland at Hampden Park in Glasgow, in the third round of the European qualifying group.
Despite taking the lead through Kostas Tsimikas in the 62nd minute, the Greek team collapsed in the final half-hour, conceding three goals from Ryan Christie (64’), Lewis Ferguson (80’), and Lyndon Dykes (90+3’). With this win, Scotland remains joint top of the group alongside Denmark, while Greece’s direct qualification chances are fading fast.
The match started promisingly for Greece, which nearly took the lead in the third minute. Tasos Bakasetas delivered a perfect low cross to Vangelis Pavlidis, who inexplicably failed to convert from just a few meters out. Greece dominated possession throughout the first half, moving the ball well but finding no clear openings against a disciplined Scottish defense.
Early in the second half, Pavlidis again came close with a header in the 47th minute, followed by Giorgos Masouras’ long-range shot at 54’ — both narrowly missing the target. The breakthrough finally came when a scramble inside Scotland’s box saw Tsimikas slot home from near the penalty spot, sending Greek fans into celebration.
But jubilation turned to despair within two minutes. Scotland equalized immediately from a corner as the Greek defense failed to clear and Christie fired past Tzolakis. The hosts gained momentum, and though Adam’s shot at 75’ deflected just wide, Ferguson’s goal at 80’ sealed the comeback after a set piece delivered by Andrew Robertson.
In stoppage time, Dykes punished a costly error by Greek goalkeeper Tzolakis, completing Scotland’s 3–1 triumph and leaving Greece with only mathematical hopes for qualification.
Following this defeat, Greece trails both Denmark and Scotland by four points and must now win all three remaining matches to secure a playoff spot through second place. The result leaves the national team and its fans bitterly disappointed, as the dream of returning to a World Cup appears to be slipping further away.
